How to File a UIDAI Complaint and Check Its Status
Most Aadhaar problems have a clear route, because UIDAI takes a broad sweep of grievances. The usual suspects: an enrolment or update stuck past its normal window, a correction that got rejected, an Aadhaar that was never generated or never delivered, a biometric or authentication failure, or an enrolment centre that overcharged you or behaved badly. You can also flag a particular operator or agency. Whatever the issue, one thing speeds everything up — your reference number. That is the EID from enrolment, or the URN or SRN from an update or service request. Dig it out before you start, because every channel asks for it first.

Step-by-Step: File Complaint on UIDAI Portal
The web portal is the easiest written route, and it hands you a tracking number. No login needed.
- Go to uidai.gov.in, open Contact & Support, then Grievance Redressal Mechanism.
- Select “Grievance and Feedback” (you may see it labelled File a Complaint).
- Enter your name, mobile number, email, and state.
- Add your EID, URN, or SRN, and describe the problem clearly.
- Attach any supporting document, submit, and save the registration number it shows.
Note that registration number down before you close the tab it is the only thing that lets you track the complaint later. Prefer the phone? The toll-free 1947 routes your issue to the right division in real time.
How to Check UIDAI Complaint Status
Once it is filed, you can follow it without phoning anyone. On uidai.gov.in, open Contact & Support, choose “Check Grievance / Feedback Status,” and punch in your registration or reference number to see whether it is open, in progress, or resolved. Filed through CPGRAMS instead? Track it on the CPGRAMS portal with the number it gave you. One thing that catches people out: the Aadhaar Mitra chatbot will answer questions and show some statuses, but it cannot register a formal complaint — for that you need the portal, 1947, email, or CPGRAMS.
UIDAI Grievance Redressal Timeline
UIDAI aims to respond within about 30 days in normal cases, and is supposed to record a reason if it runs longer. For an enrolment or update, its Citizen Charter allows a service standard of up to 90 days. So if you complain about something still inside its own processing window, you may simply be told to wait. The sensible reading: give routine requests the time they are due, but once a matter clearly drags past 30 days with nothing moving, or an update crosses 90 days, you are well within your rights to push harder and escalate.
Escalating Your UIDAI Complaint
If the first complaint stalls, step it up rather than firing off the same one again. Lodge the grievance on the Government’s CPGRAMS portal at pgportal.gov.in it is centrally monitored and tends to get a firmer response than a repeat call, and written records simply carry more weight here than phone calls. Past the 90-day Citizen Charter window, you can file an RTI to UIDAI’s Central Public Information Officer asking for the exact status and the reason for the delay; an RTI must be answered within 30 days, which often shakes a stuck case loose. And as a final on-record step, a walk-in or written application to your Regional Office puts it formally on file.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How to file complaint with UIDAI?
Complain by phone on 1947, through the Grievance and Feedback page on uidai.gov.in, by email to help@uidai.gov.in, or via the CPGRAMS portal. The web route asks for your name, contact details, state, and your EID, URN, or SRN, plus a description then it gives you a registration number to track it. It costs nothing.
What is the UIDAI complaint portal?
It is the Grievance Redressal section on uidai.gov.in, under Contact & Support, where you pick Grievance and Feedback to lodge a complaint and Check Grievance / Feedback Status to follow it. For wider escalation, the Government’s CPGRAMS portal at pgportal.gov.in also takes Aadhaar grievances and is open around the clock.
How long does UIDAI take to resolve complaints?
UIDAI aims for about 30 days in normal cases, and is meant to record a reason if it takes longer. For enrolment or update requests, the Citizen Charter sets a service standard of up to 90 days. So a complaint about something still inside that window may be asked to wait, while genuine delays beyond these timelines are fair grounds to escalate.
What types of complaints can be filed with UIDAI?
Enrolment or update delays, rejected corrections, an Aadhaar not generated or not delivered, biometric or authentication failures, overcharging at a centre, and operator or agency misconduct essentially any Aadhaar service issue. Quoting your EID, URN, or SRN helps UIDAI find the case quickly and send it to the right division for resolution.
How to check UIDAI complaint status?
On uidai.gov.in, open Contact & Support and choose Check Grievance / Feedback Status, then enter the registration or reference number you got when filing. If you used CPGRAMS, track it on the CPGRAMS portal with its number. The Aadhaar Mitra chatbot can show some statuses, but it does not register formal complaints.
What is UIDAI toll-free number?
The UIDAI helpline is 1947, free to call. Its IVRS self-service runs 24×7, while live executives are there Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., across twelve languages. Calls settle simple queries on the spot, and complaints get assigned to the relevant UIDAI division in real time.
Can I file complaint without registered mobile?
Yes. You do not need an Aadhaar-registered mobile to complain. Call 1947, file on the web portal or CPGRAMS with any contact details, email help@uidai.gov.in, or visit or post to a Regional Office. A registered mobile matters for OTP-based services, but it is not needed to lodge or track a grievance.
What if UIDAI doesn't resolve complaint?
Escalate rather than re-file the same thing. Lodge it on the centrally monitored CPGRAMS portal, and lean on written records. Past the 90-day Citizen Charter window, file an RTI to UIDAI’s Central Public Information Officer asking for the status and reason for delay, which must be answered within 30 days. A Regional Office application is a further on-record step.
