How to Link or Update Your Mobile Number in Aadhaar

The mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is required for OTP-based verification across most Aadhaar-connected services including bank logins demat accounts tax filing and subsidy credits. An outdated or unregistered number blocks access to online verification and most self-service updates on the myAadhaar portal.
Your registered number also serves as a security layer. Every time your Aadhaar is authenticated an SMS alert is sent to that number. Keeping it current ensures you are notified of any activity on your Aadhaar promptly.

Can I Update My Mobile Number Online?

As of 2026 the myAadhaar website and the older mAadhaar app do not support mobile number linking or updating.

The new official Aadhaar app does allow a mobile number update from home through face authentication. However every mobile number change must be tied to biometric or face verification. There is no document-only or website-only route for this update. If no number is currently registered against your Aadhaar the app cannot be used and a centre visit is required.

Option 1: Update via the New Aadhaar App

This is the recommended route if you can complete face authentication and confirm the new number by OTP.

Download the latest Aadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store
Open the app enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and complete the captcha
Allow camera access and complete face authentication in good lighting
Under the Services tab select Update Mobile Number
Enter the new number and verify it with the OTP sent to that number
Pay ₹75 submit and note the request number for tracking

Option 2: Update at an Aadhaar Centre

Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if no number is currently registered if face authentication is not working or if you no longer have access to the previously registered number. Your old number and supporting documents are not required for this route.

Locate your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra using the UIDAI Bhuvan map
Fill in the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Form with the new mobile number
Inform the operator that only the mobile number needs updating
Complete biometric verification through fingerprint or iris scan
Pay ₹75 and collect your acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number (URN)

How to Check Which Number Is Currently Registered

Before making any changes it is worth verifying what number is already on record.

On the myAadhaar portal go to Verify Email/Mobile Number and enter your Aadhaar number the number you want to check and the captcha. The portal confirms whether that number is linked to your Aadhaar.

UIDAI does not display your registered number in full for privacy reasons. It only confirms or denies the number you enter. If you are unsure which number is registered updating it is the practical next step.

Updating an Existing Number vs. Registering for the First Time

The process varies depending on your situation:

If your old number is still accessible and face authentication works the update can be completed through the app from home. The app may ask you to verify both the old and new number by OTP.

If you no longer have access to the old number the app route is not available. A centre visit is required where biometric verification replaces OTP confirmation.

If no number has ever been registered the centre is the only option regardless of other factors.

In all cases the new number does not go live immediately. UIDAI processes the request before the change reflects.

Common Issues to Watch Out For

Not knowing which number is currently registered is the most frequent issue and blocks every OTP-based service until resolved.

For app-based updates face authentication can fail in poor lighting or if the app version is outdated. Updating the app and attempting in natural daylight resolves most cases.

At a centre worn fingerprints due to age or manual work are common. Requesting an iris scan as an alternative usually resolves this.

Two points worth clarifying: a telecom re-verification with your mobile provider does not update the number in Aadhaar. And the update is not instant so do not expect OTPs on the new number immediately after submission.

Applicable Fee

A mobile number update costs ₹75 regardless of whether it is done through the app or at a centre. This rate has been in effect since October 2025. The earlier figure of ₹50 that appears on some websites is outdated. The fee is non-refundable so confirm you can receive OTPs on the new number before submitting.
