Payment History in CIBIL Score : Impact, DPD & How to Improve

Payment history is one of the main factors in calculating a CIBIL score. It shows how consistently a borrower has paid loan EMIs and credit dues: whether payments were made on time, in full, late, or not made. Late payments and missed payments affect the score negatively. There is no official fixed payment history weightage or CIBIL score percentage published by CIBIL. Its scoring algorithm is proprietary. What CIBIL does make clear is that payment behavior matters, and the nature and magnitude of overdue payments can affect the score.

Why payment history is the biggest scoring factor

Payment history is a major part of the CIBIL score, but calling it the biggest factor would be inaccurate. CIBIL identifies four main factors: payment history, credit utilization, age of credit, and inquiries.

Within payment history, CIBIL considers whether payments were made on time or were delayed, made in full or in part, or missed altogether. The magnitude of overdue amounts also matters.

That is why a consistent record of paying EMIs and credit card dues on time is central to maintaining a healthy credit profile.

What counts as payment history (EMIs, cards, bills)

Payment history in a CIBIL report relates to credit accounts reported by banks and financial institutions. This includes loan accounts and credit cards, with the report showing a month-on-month record of payments.

For loans, the report can show Days Past Due (DPD). DPD indicates how many days a payment was late for that account in a particular month. A value of 000 indicates payment as per the due date, while a number such as 050 indicates a payment reported as 50 days late.

You may also see STD in the DPD or asset-classification information. STD in CIBIL means Standard. CIBIL’s report glossary explains it as an account where payments are being made within 90 days.

Utility bills need a separate distinction. CIBIL does not list ordinary electricity, telephone, or other household bills as a normal source of payment-history information used for an individual’s CIBIL score. CIBIL compiles consumer credit history from information received from banks and financial institutions.

How a single missed payment impacts your score

A missed or late payment can negatively affect your CIBIL score once the lender reports the relevant information. CIBIL specifically lists late payments and missed payments as factors that may reduce the score.

However, CIBIL has no official formula stating that one missed EMI reduces the score by a fixed number of points. The impact depends on the wider credit profile and the reported details. The absolute values and qualitative characteristics of payment history, including late payments and the magnitude of overdue amounts, can have a positive or negative impact.

So how missed repayments impact your CIBIL score cannot be reduced to a universal points table.

How long late payments stay on your report

CIBIL reports contain payment history for the last 36 months. The report includes up to 36 months of DPD/payment history, with the most recent month shown first.

That means a late-payment entry can remain visible in the payment-history section for the period covered by the report.

Building a strong payment track record

The basic rule is to pay EMIs and credit card dues on time and in full.

CIBIL itself recommends paying dues on time and maintaining a good credit history. It also advises keeping credit utilization under control, applying for new credit cautiously, and reviewing the CIBIL report regularly.

Keep a check on the report too. If you’ve made a payment but the account still shows an incorrect overdue amount, the lender may not have updated the information yet. Recent payment updates generally take around 15-30 days to appear, although reporting timelines can vary.

If the information remains incorrect, you can raise a dispute with CIBIL. CIBIL cannot change lender-reported information on its own; the concerned credit institution has to confirm the correction.

Payment history vs other scoring factors

Payment history is not the only thing that determines a CIBIL score.

The four main factors are:

Factor What it reflects
Payment history Timely, delayed, missed, and other repayment behavior
Credit utilisation How much of the available credit is being used
Age of credit How long existing credit accounts have been held
Enquiries Recent applications where lenders have accessed the credit report

The CIBIL score calculation uses a proprietary algorithm.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does payment history affect CIBIL score?

CIBIL identifies payment history as one of the main factors affecting the score, but the scoring algorithm is proprietary.

What counts toward payment history?

CIBIL’s payment history reflects repayment behavior reported by banks and financial institutions on credit accounts such as loans and credit cards. It can show on-time payments, delayed payments, missed payments, and other delinquencies.

How much can one missed payment lower my score?

There is no official fixed number of points. The effect depends on the information in the credit profile, including the nature and magnitude of overdue payments.

How long does a late payment stay on my report?

CIBIL currently provides up to 36 months of payment history in the CIBIL report. A DPD entry is therefore visible within that reported payment-history period.

Does paying a few days late still count as a missed payment?

The important point is what the lender reports to CIBIL. DPD records how many days a payment is late that month.

Can consistent on-time payments repair a damaged score?

Yes, consistent on-time repayment helps build a healthier credit history over time. But there is no fixed timeline for a score to recover after a particular late payment.

Does payment history matter more than credit utilization?

CIBIL identifies both as major factors affecting the score. Payment history and credit utilization should therefore be managed together.

Do utility bill payments affect CIBIL score?

CIBIL does not identify ordinary utility bill payments as the standard source of payment-history information for an individual’s CIBIL score. CIBIL compiles consumer credit history from banks and financial institutions, including credit accounts such as loans and credit cards.

Does one late EMI outweigh years of on-time payments?

CIBIL does not provide a rule that one late EMI will automatically outweigh years of timely payments. Its scoring guidance considers the broader credit profile, including the nature and magnitude of overdue payments, payment behavior, and other scoring factors.

How can I avoid missing payments in the future?

Set up reminders or automatic payment instructions before the due date, keep enough money in the linked account, and check credit card and loan statements regularly. Also monitor the CIBIL report so you can identify and dispute incorrectly reported overdue amounts.
