How to Lock and Unlock Aadhaar Biometrics
Biometric lock is a free UIDAI feature that freezes your fingerprints and iris so they cannot be used to authenticate your Aadhaar. Once locked no one not even you can pass a fingerprint or iris check against your number until you unlock it. Your other authentication routes still work: OTP demographic details and your Virtual ID remain active. Think of it as a switch you keep off by default and flip on only for the few minutes you actually need a fingerprint scan. It costs nothing and you can use it as often as you like.

How to Lock Biometrics via mAadhaar App (2026)
The mAadhaar app now part of UIDAI’s upgraded Aadhaar app is the quickest route. You need a mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
- Install the Aadhaar app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. 2. Register your profile with your Aadhaar number and the OT then set a 4-digit PIN. 3. Open “My Aadhaar” and go to Biometric Settings.
- Turn on Enable Biometric Locking” and confirm.
- Check that the status now reads Locked on your dashboard.
How to Lock Biometrics via TOTP Method
A TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) is a six-digit code the mAadhaar app generates every 30 seconds used in place of an SMS OTP. It is useful when you have no mobile signal to receive an SMS but the app is installed. On the myAadhaar lock/unlock page choose the TOTP
option instead of “Send OTP” open the app’s TOTP screen and type the current code before it refreshes. The lock then applies the same way. Because the code lives inside the app TOTP also works for people whose number receives several Aadhaar OTPs.
How to Unlock Aadhaar Biometrics
Unlocking is deliberately temporary. On the mAadhaar app open Biometric Settings and turn off the lock or use the one-click unlock shortcut; on the myAadhaar portal open Lock/Unlock Biometrics choose Unlock enter your virtual ID and captcha and verify the OTP. Your biometrics stay unlocked for only 10 minutes then re-lock automatically. So unlock just before the fingerprint scan not hours ahead. If you have no internet send the unlock SMS to 1947 with your Virtual ID ready.
What Happens When Biometrics Are Locked
With the lock on every fingerprint and iris authentication against your Aadhaar fails which is exactly the point. Use biometric lock for everyday protection against fingerprint misuse. Use full Aadhaar lock when you want to suspend the number entirely and rely only on VID.
