How to Link Aadhaar with Your Ration Card
Linking Aadhaar with your ration card is no longer optional. Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Aadhaar-based verification (eKYC) is now mandatory for ration cardholders and it must be completed for every member listed on the card, not just the head of the household. Getting this done keeps your subsidised food grains flowing and unlocks ration portability across states. This guide covers why it matters, how the process works state by state, what documents you need, and what you actually gain from it.

Why Link Aadhaar with Your Ration Card
There are both practical and now compulsory reasons to do this.
To keep receiving rations. The government has made Aadhaar-based eKYC mandatory for all Public Distribution System (PDS) beneficiaries. A cardholder or family member who hasn’t been verified can have their card flagged as “unauthenticated,” which can lead to suspended subsidised grains and even removal from the NFSA database entirely.
To enable portability under ONORC. Once your Aadhaar is seeded and verified, your card works under the One Nation One Ration Card scheme. You can collect your ration from any Fair Price Shop anywhere in India, which matters a great deal for migrant workers and families who move between states.
To clean up the system. Aadhaar verification helps remove duplicate and fake cards, prevents one household from holding multiple cards, and keeps ineligible claimants out so genuine families actually get their entitlement.
One distinction worth knowing: Aadhaar “seeding” means linking your Aadhaar number to your ration card record. eKYC is the authentication step, done by biometric or OTP, that confirms the seeded Aadhaar genuinely belongs to the person. The current nationwide drive aims to complete this eKYC for every member on every card.
State-Wise Aadhaar Ration Card Linking Process
Here’s what trips most people up: there is no single central portal for this. Ration cards are administered by each State and UT’s Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, so the online process runs on your own state’s PDS portal, basically the food or civil-supplies website for your state.
The national NFSA portal (nfsa.gov.in) and the Mera Ration app work across states for checking seeding status. The government’s Mera eKYC app, which uses Aadhaar face authentication and OTP, was also launched to help those who can’t reach an e-POS machine.
Because each state runs its own system, a few things vary:
The menu labels are different across portals. Look for “Aadhaar Seeding,” “Link Aadhaar,” “e-KYC,” or “Ration Card Services / e-Services” on your state’s site.
Online availability is not uniform. Some states offer full online linking and eKYC. Others require you to visit a Fair Price Shop for biometric verification.
Deadlines vary by state. The central government’s initial national target was around March 2025 but most states have extended their cutoffs into 2026. Check your state portal for the current date and do not wait, as access can be suspended after the deadline passes.
To find your state’s portal start at nfsa.gov.in which links out to each state’s food and civil-supplies department.
Step-by-Step: Link Aadhaar with Your Ration Card
Choose whichever route works for you.
Online via State PDS Portal
- Visit your state’s PDS or Food & Civil Supplies portal
- Open “Link Aadhaar with Ration Card,” “Aadhaar Seeding,” or “e-KYC” (usually under e-Services)
- Enter your ration card number and the Aadhaar number of each member along with your registered mobile number
- Upload any required documents, verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile and submit
- You’ll typically get an SMS confirmation within 24 to 48 hours since backend updates happen in batches and aren’t always instant
Via Mera Ration or Mera eKYC App
- Download the app and open Aadhaar Seeding or e-KYC
- Enter your ration card number and Aadhaar details
- Verify by OTP or face authentication (the Mera eKYC app uses Aadhaar face authentication specifically)
Offline at the Fair Price Shop, Ration Office, or CSC
- Visit your FPS or ration office with Aadhaar copies of all family members and a copy of your ration card
- The dealer pulls up your household details on the e-POS device
- Each member completes biometric verification through fingerprint or iris scan to finish eKYC
- You receive an SMS or receipt confirming submission
Note that under the Aadhaar-enabled PDS, biometric or OTP authentication at the e-POS is also required each time you collect rations.
Documents Required
For the online or eKYC route the requirements are fairly light since it’s authentication-based:
- Aadhaar card of each family member listed on the ration card
- Ration card or ration card number
- Active Aadhaar-linked mobile number for the OTP
For offline at the FPS or ration office also carry:
- Self-attested photocopies of Aadhaar for all members and a copy of the ration card
- A passport-size photo of the head of the family (some offices ask for this)
- A bank passbook copy if your Aadhaar isn’t yet linked to your bank account (some states require it)
- Be ready for biometric verification on the e-POS device
A note for children: those under five may not have Aadhaar yet. Many states temporarily exempt them from seeding but you should enrol them for Baal Aadhaar and link it once issued.
Benefits of Linking Aadhaar with Your Ration Card
Uninterrupted food security. Verified cardholders keep receiving subsidised grains under NFSA and schemes like PMGKAY without disruption.
Ration portability under ONORC. Collect your entitlement from any Fair Price Shop across India. This is particularly valuable for migrant workers and mobile populations.
Fewer fake and duplicate cards. Aadhaar verification prevents the same person from holding multiple cards and removes bogus beneficiaries from the system.
Fairer targeting. It keeps ineligible claimants out so subsidies actually reach the families entitled to them.
Faster and more transparent service. Aadhaar-seeded records speed up authentication at e-POS machines and keep beneficiary data current and accurate

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I link Aadhaar with my ration card?
Link it online on your state’s PDS portal by opening Aadhaar Seeding or e-KYC, entering your ration card number and each member’s Aadhaar along with your registered mobile, and verifying by OTP. Alternatively use the Mera Ration or Mera eKYC app with OTP or face authentication, or complete it offline at your Fair Price Shop with Aadhaar copies of all members and biometric verification.
Is Aadhaar-ration card linking mandatory?
Yes. Aadhaar-based eKYC is mandatory for all PDS beneficiaries under NFSA and must be completed for every member on the card. Failing to complete it by the applicable deadline can lead to the card being flagged, subsidies suspended, and names removed from the database.
How does the process differ by state?
Since ration cards are state-administered there is no single central linking portal. You use your own state or UT’s PDS portal. Find your state’s food and civil-supplies department via nfsa.gov.in and use its Aadhaar Seeding or e-KYC option. Where a state doesn’t offer it online, complete it at a Fair Price Shop instead.
What documents do I need for ration card Aadhaar linking?
Mainly your Aadhaar for each member, your ration card or number, and an active Aadhaar-linked mobile for the OTP. For offline at the FPS also carry self-attested Aadhaar copies of all members, a ration card copy, a passport photo of the head of household if asked, and a bank passbook copy if your bank isn’t Aadhaar-linked. Biometric verification is done on the spot.
How do I check my ration card Aadhaar linking status?
Check on nfsa.gov.in where ration card details show each member’s Aadhaar seeding status, via the Mera Ration app under Aadhaar Seeding by entering your ration card number, or on your state PDS portal under “Ration Card e-KYC Status, Aadhaar Seeding Status” using your Aadhaar or ration card number.
Can Aadhaar linking be done at the PDS shop?
Yes. Your Fair Price Shop can complete it offline. The dealer pulls up your household on the e-POS device and each member completes biometric verification through fingerprint or iris scan. This is the main route for those whose Aadhaar isn’t linked to an active mobile number.
What if the name on my Aadhaar doesn't match my ration card?
A name or detail mismatch will cause linking or eKYC to fail. Correct it first by updating your ration card record at the ration office or on the state portal, or update your Aadhaar via UIDAI, so both documents match before you retry. Also make sure your Aadhaar-linked mobile is active for the OTP.
What are the benefits of linking my ration card with Aadhaar?
Uninterrupted subsidised grain under NFSA, ration portability across India via ONORC (especially useful for migrants), elimination of duplicate and fake cards, fairer targeting that keeps ineligible claimants out, and faster more transparent authentication at Fair Price Shops.
