Aadhaar Authentication for GST Registration: Process and Rules

Aadhaar authentication in GST is the step where an applicant proves their identity using Aadhaar while registering for GST. After you submit the registration form (GST REG-01), the portal asks the key people behind the business to verify themselves either through an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile or, if the system flags the application, through biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra. It links your GST registration to your verified Aadhaar identity. The purpose is simple: to stop fake firms being registered on stolen or fabricated identities, a problem that fuelled large input-tax-credit frauds. In effect, it is the identity gate to getting a GSTIN.

Why GSTN Requires Aadhaar Authentication

The push for Aadhaar authentication came from a wave of fraudulent registrations shell firms created to issue fake invoices and claim input tax credit they were never entitled to. By tying each registration to a biometrically verified identity, GSTN makes it far harder to register a business in someone else’s name or a fictitious one. It also speeds up genuine applications: a clean Aadhaar authentication can move an application forward quickly, while suspicious ones are routed to physical checks. The legal backing sits in Section 25 of the CGST Act and Rule 8  of the CGST Rules, and the biometric process was extended across all of India from February 2025.

Step-by-Step: Complete Aadhaar Auth for GST (2026)

After filing REG-01, the chosen individuals, the Primary Authorised Signatory and at least one Promoter or Partner  must authenticate within 15 days

  1. Submit GST REG-01 and opt “Yes” for Aadhaar authentication.
  2. Check the email and mobile of the authorised signatory and promoter/partner for the link. 3. For OTP authentication, click the link, enter the Aadhaar number, and submit the OTP. 4. If flagged for biometric, book a slot and visit the assigned GST Suvidha Kendra. 5. At the GSK, give your photograph, biometrics, and original documents for verification.

On success, the Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated and the application  proceeds. For a company or LLP, authenticating the Primary Authorised Signatory is generally  sufficient.

What If Aadhaar Authentication Fails for GST

If authentication fails or you opt out, your application is not rejected outright  it switches to a slower, verification-heavy path. Where Aadhaar is not completed, the rules require physical verification of your business premises by the proper officer under Rule 9 and Rule 25, and  the officer gets up to 30 days from the end of the 15-day window to act. Common causes of  failure are a mismatch in your Aadhaar name, date of birth, or gender; fix those on your Aadhaar first, then complete the step at the GSK within the deadline. Miss the window entirely  and the ARN is not generated, so the application lapses and must be refiled.

Who is Exempt from GST Aadhaar Authentication

Not everyone must authenticate via Aadhaar. Non-citizens of India are exempt, as are persons specifically notified by the Government under the CGST Act. There is also a practical  exemption: a Promoter or Partner who has already completed biometric verification in any  State or Union Territory for an earlier registration need not repeat it for a new one  though if  they become the Primary Authorised Signatory for the new entity, document verification at the  GSK is still required. Mandatory authentication, by contrast, applies t o authorised signatories,  managing or authorised partners, and the Karta of a Hindu Undivided Family.

Impact on GST Registration Timeline

Authentication choice directly shapes how fast you get registered. A successful Aadhaar  authentication is the quick route  the application moves ahead and, where everything is in  order, registration can be granted in about seven working days. Opting out or failing pushes you onto the physical-verification track, which can take around 30 days because an officer must  inspect the premises. There is a safeguard: under Rule 9(5), if the officer takes no action within  the prescribed time, the registration is deemed approved. So Aadhaar authentication is not just a security step; for a genuine applicant it is the difference between a week and a month.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Aadhaar authentication in GST?

It is the step in GST registration where the key people behind a business verify their identity using Aadhaar by OTP, or by biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra if the system flags the application. It links the GST registration to a verified identity, mainly to prevent fake firms being registered for input-tax-credit fraud. It is governed by Section 25 of the CGST Act and Rule 8.

Is Aadhaar mandatory for GST registration?

You can opt out, but it is effectively expected. If you choose Aadhaar authentication and pass, registration is faster. If you decline or fail, registration is granted only after physical verification of your business premises, which takes longer. Aadhaar authentication itself is mandatory for authorised signatories, managing or authorised partners, and the Karta of an HUF; non-citizens are exempt.

How to complete Aadhaar authentication for GST?

After filing GST REG-01 and opting Yes for Aadhaar, the authorised signatory and at least one promoter or partner get a link by email and SMS. Click it, enter the Aadhaar number, and submit the OTP sent to the linked mobile. If the application is flagged, instead book a slot and complete biometric authentication and document verification at the assigned GST Suvidha Kendra within 15 days.

What if Aadhaar auth fails for GST?

The application is not rejected immediately; it moves to physical verification of your business premises by the proper officer. Failures are often due to a mismatch in your Aadhaar name, date of birth, or gender, so correct those on Aadhaar and complete the step at the GSK within the deadline. If you miss the 15-day window entirely, no ARN is generated and you must refile.

Who is exempt from GST Aadhaar authentication?

Non-citizens of India are exempt, as are persons specifically notified by the Government under the CGST Act. In practice, a promoter or partner who has already completed biometric verification in any state for an earlier registration need not repeat it, though they may still need document verification if they become the primary authorised signatory for the new entity.

How long does GST Aadhaar authentication take?

OTP-based authentication is near-instant once you enter the code. If biometric verification is required, it depends on booking and attending your GST Suvidha Kendra slot, but it must be completed within 15 days of submitting Part B of REG-01. With successful Aadhaar authentication, registration is often granted in about seven working days, far quicker than the physical-verification route.

What is the alternative if Aadhaar auth fails?

The alternative is the non-Aadhaar route: you select No for Aadhaar authentication, or proceed after a failure, and the proper officer conducts physical verification of your principal place of business under Rule 9 and Rule 25. For some applicants this means photo capture and original document verification at a facilitation centre. This path is valid but slower, typically adding up to about 30 days.

Can GST registration be cancelled without Aadhaar?

Aadhaar authentication mainly governs getting and reviving a registration rather than cancellation. Notably, certain existing taxpayers must complete Aadhaar authentication before applying to revoke a cancelled registration or to claim some IGST refunds. So while a registration can be cancelled by the authorities or on request, Aadhaar authentication can become a prerequisite for reversing a cancellation. Check the current requirement on the GST portal.
