Aadhaar Card for NRIs: Eligibility Documents and Process

Yes. A non-resident Indian who holds a valid Indian passport can get an Aadhaar and the rules now make it easier than many older guides suggest. The earlier requirement to have stayed in India for 182 days no longer applies to NRIs with an Indian passport you can apply on any visit to India even a short one as long as you have the documents. What has not changed is that enrollment is done in person at a centre in India because your fingerprints iris and photo are captured live. Aadhaar is not mandatory for NRIs but it makes banking tax filing and verification in India far smoother.

Who is Eligible: NRI Aadhaar Rules 2026

Eligibility splits by what passport you hold and this is where confusion creeps in. An NRI with a valid Indian passport is eligible immediately with no minimum-stay condition. An OCI cardholder who is legally a foreign national is treated differently: they must have stayed in India for more than 182 days in the twelve months immediately before applying. So the 182-day rule that many websites still quote for NRIs actually applies to OCIs now not to Indian passport holders. If you carry an Indian passport you are an NRI for this purpose; if you carry a  foreign passport with an OCI card the residency test applies.

Documents Required for NRI Aadhaar

For an NRI the valid Indian passport is mandatory and does most of the work  it serves as  Proof of Identity and date-of-birth proof in one. A valid email address is required for all  applications. For address the passport works if it carries your Indian address; if not supply a  separate Indian Proof of Address such as a bank statement utility bill or a relative’s proof with  consent. You can give a foreign mobile number but it will not receive UIDAI’s SMS so an  Indian number is more practical. NRI enrolment uses a different form and declaration from a  resident’s so use the correct NRI form at the centre.

Step-by-Step: NRI Aadhaar Application Process

Enrolment must be done in person in India. Book ahead at a well-staffed Aadhaar Seva Kendra  to avoid confusion over NRI cases.

  1. Locate an Aadhaar Seva Kendra on the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal and book a slot. 2. Carry your valid Indian passport and an Indian address proof if your passport lacks one. 3. Fill the NRI enrolment form and read the NRI declaration before signing it. 4. Give your email and let the centre capture your fingerprints iris and photo. 5. Collect the acknowledgement slip with the 14-digit Enrolment ID to track status.

Delivery can take up to 90 days by post to your Indian address. You can download the  eAadhaar online as soon as it is generated without waiting for the printed card.

Is Aadhaar Mandatory for NRI Bank Accounts in India

No. Aadhaar is not mandatory to open or maintain an NRE or NRO account; your passport  visa and PAN are the core documents banks need and many NRE/NRO accounts are opened  entirely from abroad through video KYC. Aadhaar simply makes Indian KYC smoother where  you have one. One caveat worth noting: Aadhaar does not change your tax residency which  depends on your days in India not on holding a card. And PAN-Aadhaar linking which can  make a PAN inoperative if missed is a requirement for residents  a genuine NRI who is not  eligible for Aadhaar is not caught by it.

OCI Card Holders and Aadhaar

OCI cardholders can get an Aadhaar but only after meeting the 182-day residency test described above. Their documents differ too: a valid foreign passport and the OCI card serve as identity proof with an Indian address proof for PoA and a mandatory email. Proof of the stay  passport entry and exit stamps or FRRO registration  is checked at the centre to confirm the  182 days. As with NRIs enrolment is in person only; there is no remote or overseas option.  Aadhaar is voluntary for OCIs and mainly eases banking SIMs and KYC during longer stays in  India. It never serves as proof of citizenship.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can NRI get Aadhaar card?

Yes. An NRI with a valid Indian passport can enrol for Aadhaar at a centre in India. The earlier 182-day stay requirement no longer applies to Indian-passport NRIs so you can apply on any visit even a short one provided you have the documents. Aadhaar is not mandatory for NRIs but it simplifies banking tax filing and identity verification in India.

What documents NRI needs for Aadhaar?

A valid Indian passport is mandatory and serves as both proof of identity and date of birth. A valid email address is required. For address the passport works if it shows your Indian address; otherwise provide a separate Indian proof such as a bank statement or utility bill. A foreign mobile number can be given but will not receive UIDAI’s SMS so an Indian number is preferable.

How to apply for Aadhaar as NRI?

Book a slot at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in India carry your valid Indian passport and an Indian address proof if needed and fill the NRI enrolment form signing the NRI declaration. Give your email and let the centre capture your fingerprints iris and photo. Collect the slip with the 14- digit Enrolment ID. It must be done in person; there is no overseas option.

Is Indian passport enough for NRI Aadhaar?

For identity and date of birth yes a valid Indian passport is the mandatory and sufficient proof. For address it is enough only if it carries your current Indian address. If your passport shows a foreign or outdated address you must add a separate Indian proof of address such as a bank statement utility bill or a relative’s address proof given with consent.

Can NRI apply for Aadhaar online?

No. While you can book an appointment online the enrolment itself must be done in person at a centre in India because biometrics fingerprints iris and photo are captured live. There is no remote or overseas enrolment. After enrolment however you can download your eAadhaar online and later update some details such as address through the myAadhaar portal.

Is Aadhaar mandatory for NRI bank accounts?

No. Aadhaar is not required to open or maintain an NRE or NRO account; banks rely on your passport visa and PAN and many accounts are opened from abroad via video KYC. Aadhaar only makes Indian KYC smoother where you hold one. It also does not affect your tax residency which is decided by your days in India rather than by holding an Aadhaar.

How long does NRI Aadhaar take?

After enrolment the Aadhaar can take up to about 90 days to be generated and delivered by post to your Indian address though it is often faster. You can track the status online using the 14-digit Enrolment ID on your acknowledgement slip and download the eAadhaar as soon as it is generated without waiting for the physical card to arrive.

Can OCI card holders get Aadhaar?

Yes but only if they have stayed in India for more than 182 days in the twelve months immediately before applying. OCI cardholders are treated as resident foreign nationals so unlike Indian-passport NRIs they must meet this residency test. They enrol in person with a valid foreign passport OCI card an Indian address proof and a mandatory email. Aadhaar remains voluntary for them.
