How to Change Your Name in Aadhaar: Online and Offline (2026 Guide)
Your Aadhaar name is matched against your bank records PAN card and government databases every time you complete identity verification. Even a minor spelling difference can cause KYC failures subsidy delays or processing issues with other official documents. Name updates are most commonly needed after marriage to correct an enrolment error or after a legal name change. Keeping your Aadhaar name consistent with your other documents avoids rejections across Aadhaar-linked services.

Documents Required
You need one valid Proof of Identity (PoI) that shows your photograph and the updated name. UIDAI accepts over a dozen document types. The most commonly submitted are:
- Passport PAN card voter ID or driving licence
- Marriage certificate for a surname change after marriage
- Gazette notification or court order for a legal name change
- A photo identity certificate on UIDAI letterhead signed by a gazetted officer
The name on the document must match your entry exactly including initials and spacing. A mismatch is the most common reason requests are rejected.
How to Change Your Name Online
This route is available on the myAadhaar portal if your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar.
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Login
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number complete the captcha and enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile
- Select Update Aadhaar Online and choose the Name field
- Type the new name exactly as it appears on your supporting document
- Upload a clear colour scan of your Proof of Identity
- Pay the applicable fee submit and save the Service Request Number (SRN)
If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar this route is not available and you will need to visit a centre.
How to Change Your Name Offline
Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if your mobile is not registered with Aadhaar or if you have already used both permitted online name changes.
- Find your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra using the UIDAI Bhuvan map
- Fill in the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Form available at the centre or on uidai.gov.in
- Hand over your original Proof of Identity for the operator to scan
- Complete biometric verification through fingerprint or iris scan
- Pay the applicable fee and collect your acknowledgement slip which carries your Update Request Number (URN)
Processing Time
UIDAI processes name change requests within 30 days of submission. In practice most straightforward requests with clear documents are completed within a few working days. Requests that require manual review take longer. You will receive an SMS once the update is approved and the updated eAadhaar will be available to download.
How to Track Your Request
Keep your SRN or URN from the acknowledgement slip handy.
- Go to the myAadhaar portal
- Open Check Aadhaar Update Status under My Aadhaar
- Enter your SRN or URN and complete the captcha
- Submit to see the current status: in progress approved or rejected
If approved download the updated eAadhaar immediately. If rejected the status screen will show the reason so you can correct it before resubmitting.
Common Reasons for Rejection
Most rejections are document-related:
- The name entered does not match the supporting document exactly
- The uploaded scan is blurry cropped or in black and white
- The document is not on UIDAI’s accepted list or does not include a photograph
- The request exceeds the two permitted lifetime name changes without Regional Office approval
Submitting a clear colour scan with the name matching your document letter for letter resolves most of these issues on resubmission.
Name Change After Marriage
A marriage certificate issued by the registrar is the standard document for a post-marriage surname change and is accepted directly by UIDAI. If the certificate is not yet available a name-change document signed by a gazetted officer in UIDAI’s prescribed format is accepted as an interim alternative.
This can be done online or at a centre. It uses one of the two permitted lifetime name changes. In cases of divorce the court-issued decree serves the same purpose as a marriage certificate.
