How to Link Your Aadhaar Card with Your NPS Account

Linking your Aadhaar with your National Pension System (NPS) account connects your 12-digit Aadhaar to your PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) through Aadhaar OTP authentication. You can do it online via the eNPS portal or in person at a POP-SP which is typically your bank or another empanelled service provider.
One thing worth knowing before you start: the operator formerly known as NSDL e-Governance is now Protean eGov Technologies, and the NPS portals have moved to new proteantech.in addresses. The process itself is the same only the URLs have changed.

Paperless onboarding and eSign. Aadhaar e-KYC lets you open and manage an NPS account entirely online. OTP authentication plus eSign means no physical form submission and new subscribers typically get their PRAN generated almost instantly.

Faster OTP-based verification. Many account actions are verified via an OTP to your Aadhaar-registered mobile quicker and more secure than document-based checks.

Smoother withdrawals and exits. A seeded Aadhaar and complete KYC make the exit withdrawal and annuity-purchase process significantly faster since identity verification is already sorted. More on this below.

Cleaner records. Aadhaar-based authentication reduces identity errors and keeps your profile consistent across the CRA system.

Two conditions apply throughout: the name on your PRAN must match your Aadhaar and your mobile number must be registered with Aadhaar since linking works through OTP authentication only.

The old NSDL portal is now the Protean eNPS portal at enps.nps-proteantech.in, with account transactions handled at cra.nps-proteantech.in.

If You’re an Existing Subscriber

  1. Go to the Protean eNPS portal and log in with your PRAN and password (or use the Aadhaar seeding option directly on the portal).
  2. Open the Aadhaar seeding / update details section for your PRAN.
  3. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number (or Virtual ID) and click Generate OTP.
  4. Accept the disclaimer and proceed an OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  5. Enter the OTP and verify. Once authenticated, your Aadhaar is seeded against your PRAN.

If You’re a New Subscriber

  1. On the eNPS portal choose Registration and select the Aadhaar (e-KYC) route.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number generate and verify the OTP.
  3. Complete the registration form choose your Tier I (and optionally Tier II) account and make the initial contribution.
  4. eSign the form using Aadhaar OTP a nominal eSign charge of around ₹5.90 applies to avoid physical submission. Your PRAN is then generated.

Government-sector subscribers: Aadhaar seeding is treated as complete only after the relevant Nodal officer (PAO/DDO) approves the request.

Prefer doing it in person or don’t use online banking? You can link your Aadhaar through a Point of Presence Service Provider (POP-SP) that is empanelled by PFRDA to service NPS accounts.

  1. Visit your POP-SP branch (usually the bank where you opened or manage your NPS account).
  2. Ask for the Aadhaar seeding / subscriber details modification form and fill in your PRAN and Aadhaar details.
  3. Submit it along with a self-attested copy of your Aadhaar and identity proof for verification.
  4. The POP-SP verifies your details and forwards the request to the CRA which updates your PRAN record.

For government employees seeding goes through the Nodal office rather than a retail POP-SP. Hold onto your acknowledgement until the status updates.

What This Means for NPS Withdrawal and Annuity

When you exit NPS whether it’s a partial withdrawal premature exit or superannuation, your KYC needs to be complete and your identity verifiable. A seeded Aadhaar speeds this up considerably: online exit requests use Aadhaar OTP authentication and your verified details flow through to bank account verification and annuity onboarding.

At exit part of your corpus is paid as a lump sum and for the mandated portion you must purchase an annuity from an Annuity Service Provider (ASP) which also requires valid KYC. If your Aadhaar isn’t seeded or your KYC has mismatched details the withdrawal and annuity process can get delayed or pushed to slower physical verification.

Linking doesn’t change what you’re entitled to it just makes receiving it faster and smoother.

How to Check Your NPS Aadhaar Linking Status

Through the CRA portal. Log in at cra.nps-proteantech.in with your PRAN and password then check your profile or KYC details to see whether Aadhaar is seeded.

By acknowledgement number. For a new registration or a POP-submitted request track the PRAN application status using your acknowledgement number at npscra.proteantech.in.

Via your POP-SP or helpline. Your POP-SP can confirm the seeding status or call the NPS-CRA toll-free number: 1800 210 0080.

If seeding hasn’t gone through the usual reasons are a name or date-of-birth mismatch with Aadhaar or an inactive Aadhaar-registered mobile. Fix those first then retry.
