CIBIL Score vs CIBIL Rank : Differences, Scale, Eligibility & Uses
A CIBIL Score and a CIBIL Rank both help lenders assess credit risk, but they are meant for different borrowers.
The CIBIL Score is for individuals. CIBIL Rank (CMR) in commercial credit reporting is designed for eligible businesses and is issued as part of the Company Credit Report (CCR). The biggest difference is that one runs from 300 to 900, while the other runs from 1 to 10.

CIBIL score
A CIBIL Score is a three-digit summary of an individual’s credit history. It ranges from 300 to 900, with a score closer to 900 generally indicating a stronger credit profile.
The CIBIL score calculation is based on information in the individual’s credit report, particularly details in the Accounts and Enquiries sections. Payment history, credit utilisation, age of credit and enquiries are among the major factors that affect it.
The score is used by lenders while evaluating applications for products such as home loans, personal loans, vehicle loans and credit cards. It is not, however, the only factor in a lending decision. CIBIL itself does not approve or reject loans.
Understanding the types of CIBIL score available for different borrowers can make credit reports easier to read.
A credit score vs CIBIL score distinction is that CIBIL Score is specifically generated by TransUnion CIBIL, while credit score is a broader term used for scores provided by credit information companies.
What is CIBIL rank
CIBIL Rank is a numerical summary of a company’s credit report (CCR). It is designed for eligible commercial borrowers and indicates the company’s credit risk based on its reported credit history.
The rank ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best rank. A rank closer to 1 indicates a stronger credit profile and better chances of securing credit. CIBIL currently makes the rank available to companies with current credit exposure of up to ₹50 crore.
The CCR itself is more detailed. It records the company’s credit history based on information supplied by lending institutions, while the rank condenses that information into a single number.
That is the basic meaning of a company credit rank.
What is the difference between CIBIL score & CIBIL rank
The table outlines the features of CIBIL score vs CIBIL rank:
| Feature | CIBIL Score | CIBIL Rank (CMR) |
| Borrower | Individuals | Eligible businesses / commercial borrowers |
| Report | Individual CIBIL Credit Report | Company Credit Report (CCR) |
| Scale | 300-900 | 1-10 |
| Best value | Closer to 900 | 1 |
| What it summarises | Individual credit history | Company’s commercial credit history |
| Main use | Personal loans, home loans, credit cards and other individual credit | Business and commercial credit assessment |
| Eligibility | Individuals with reportable credit history | Companies with current credit exposure up to ₹50 crore, subject to CIBIL’s eligibility conditions |
| Who uses it | Lenders assessing individual borrowers | Banks and financial institutions assessing businesses |
Individual vs business applicability
This is the easiest distinction to remember.
An individual applying for a personal home loan or credit card will generally have a CIBIL Score. A business seeking commercial credit may have a CIBIL Rank and Company Credit Report if it meets CIBIL’s eligibility conditions.
So, a person does not normally get a CIBIL Rank simply because they own a company.
The rank belongs to the eligible business credit profile.
Scale: 300-900 vs 1-10
The two numbers work in opposite directions.
With a CIBIL Score, higher is better. The score runs from 300 to 900.
With CIBIL Rank, lower is better. Rank 1 is the strongest position on the scale, while 10 represents the weakest end of the ranking.
That makes comparing the two numbers directly meaningless.
A CIBIL Score of 800 cannot be compared with a CIBIL Rank of 2 as if they were equivalent ratings.
Consumers can check their CIBIL score through TransUnion CIBIL and access one free CIBIL Score and Report each calendar year.
How lenders use each
Lenders use both as credit-risk indicators, but the surrounding information is different.
For an individual, the CIBIL Score sits within the person’s credit report and helps lenders assess past borrowing and repayment behaviour.
For a business, the CIBIL Rank summarises the Company’s Credit Report. The CCR is used by loan providers to make informed credit decisions, and the rank is one of the indicators considered while evaluating a company’s loan application.
Neither number guarantees approval.
Who gets a CIBIL rank instead of a score?
CIBIL Rank is meant for commercial borrowers, particularly eligible businesses with current credit exposure of up to ₹50 crore. Certain legal entities and businesses without a qualifying live credit facility may not receive a rank.
The Rank is a risk indicator for MSMEs with aggregated credit exposure between ₹10 lakh and ₹50 crore. A rank may show as NA in certain cases, including when the entity does not meet the applicable exposure criteria, belongs to certain excluded legal constitutions, or has no live credit facility in the past 36 months.
How is CIBIL rank (CMR) calculated?
The major parameters used in the calculation include past repayment behaviour and credit utilisation.
CIBIL Rank uses the business’s credit history, and a recent CIBIL article notes that the calculation uses the business’s past 24 months of credit history shared by lenders.
Can a business have both a score and a rank?
A business can have different credit information associated with the individuals behind it, but the CIBIL Rank itself is a commercial-business measure, not the company’s personal CIBIL Score.
The Company’s Credit Report and CIBIL Rank relate to the business entity and its reported commercial credit exposure. An individual proprietor, promoter or director can separately have a personal CIBIL Score based on their own credit history.
The two profiles should not be treated as interchangeable.
How to improve a CIBIL rank
The fundamentals are fairly straightforward.
Pay business credit obligations on time. CIBIL identifies repayment behaviour as a major factor affecting the Rank. Delinquencies, overdue amounts, and defaults can hurt the business’s credit profile.
Keep credit utilisation under control. CIBIL specifically identifies credit utilisation as another major Rank parameter.
It also helps to review the Company’s Credit Report regularly and dispute inaccurate information. A clean credit history gives lenders a clearer picture of the business’s repayment behaviour.
Common confusion explained
The biggest mistake is treating CIBIL Score and CIBIL Rank as two versions of the same number. A CIBIL Score is a 300-900 individual credit score. CIBIL Rank is a 1-10 commercial credit-risk indicator derived from an eligible company’s Company Credit Report.
Another common mistake is saying that a CIBIL Rank of 10 is better than a rank of 1 because the number is higher. It is the opposite. Rank 1 is the best.
For businesses, commercial CIBIL products provide lenders with information on a company’s credit exposure and repayment behaviour.
And there is no official CIBIL rule saying that a particular Rank guarantees a business loan. Lenders make their own credit decisions after considering the company’s overall financial and credit profile.
