PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan Eligibility Criteria
The PM Vidyalakshmi Portal is a digital platform that enables eligible students to apply for an education loan under the PM-Vidyalakshmi scheme. Vidyalakshmi Education Loan Eligibility primarily depends on admission to an eligible higher education institution through the prescribed admission process. Loan eligibility is separate from the 3% interest subvention, which has additional income-based conditions. Students across family-income groups can seek the loan, while income limits apply to the interest subvention benefit.

Who Can Apply Through the PM-Vidyalakshmi Portal?
Students admitted to designated Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs) in India can apply for an education loan through the PM-Vidyalakshmi Portal. PM-Vidyalakshmi education loan eligibility requires admission through merit-based selection or an open competitive examination. Students admitted through management quota or similar quota are excluded. The loan covers both degree and diploma programs at eligible QHEIs. The loan has no family-income ceiling. The amount has no fixed upper limit and is determined by course fees and eligible expenses such as hostel, mess, laptop, and reasonable living costs.
Institution Eligibility (NIRF-Ranked HEIs)
PM-Vidyalakshmi eligibility is linked to admission in designated Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs). Under the scheme guidelines, these include HEIs ranked in the top 100 in the latest NIRF overall, category-specific, or domain-specific rankings; the top 200 state/UT government HEIs in NIRF; and all remaining HEIs under the Government of India. The eligible list is updated annually using the latest NIRF rankings.
The list currently includes 902 HEIs eligible under the scheme. Top institutes like IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru, and IIM Ahmedabad are included. Students should therefore verify their institution’s inclusion rather than assume eligibility based only on its reputation or ranking. Eligible degree and diploma programs are covered, but institutional eligibility does not override personal requirements such as merit-based admission. This differs from the central sector interest subsidy CSIS, which has its own eligibility conditions.
Income-Based Interest Subvention Under Vidyalakshmi
The 3% interest subvention under PM-Vidyalakshmi is separate from education loan eligibility. While students from all family-income groups can apply for a loan, the interest benefit is available only to students with an annual family income of up to ₹8 lakh, subject to other scheme conditions. The subvention applies to education loans of up to ₹10 lakh; if the sanctioned amount exceeds this limit, the 3% benefit applies only to the first ₹10 lakh. The subsidy covers interest accrued during the moratorium period, defined as the course duration plus one year. The scheme has an annual beneficiary cap of 1 lakh students, so meeting the income criteria does not guarantee selection. These conditions differ from CSIS subsidy eligibility, which follows separate rules and benefits under the Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme.
Documents Needed to Register
Students generally need basic identity, academic, and admission documents to register and apply for an education loan through the PM-Vidyalakshmi Portal. These may include Aadhaar or another accepted identity document, PAN, recent academic marksheets, proof of admission, and the institution’s admission letter or fee structure. Applicants seeking interest subvention may also need a valid family-income certificate or other income proof. Lenders require bank account details for loan processing and related transactions. The lender may additionally request documents such as address proof, photographs, co-borrower details, and supporting financial records. See the full list of documents required for an education loan for more details.
PM-Vidyalakshmi vs CSIS and CGFSEL
PM-Vidyalakshmi, CSIS and CGFSEL provide different forms of education-loan support. PM-Vidyalakshmi covers students admitted to designated QHEIs and provides loans without collateral or third-party guarantees; eligible students with family income up to ₹8 lakh can receive a 3% interest subvention. Under PM-USP CSIS, students with family income up to ₹4.5 lakh pursuing eligible technical or professional courses can receive 100% interest subvention during the moratorium period on loans up to ₹10 lakh.
CGFSEL, or the Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for education loans, is different because it provides a government credit guarantee rather than an interest subsidy. For education loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, the scheme covers 75% of the outstanding default, subject to its conditions. So qualifying under one scheme does not automatically make you eligible for another.
