The 11-characters code assigned to each bank branch is known as the IFSC code or Indian Financial System Code. It is assigned by the Reserve Bank of India to provide a distinct identity to each branch and to eliminate errors during financial transactions. The IFSC code is mandatory for banks and branches engaging in electronic payment methods like IMPS, RTGS and NEFT. No two banks or their branches can have the same IFSC code.
