How to Change Your Address in Aadhaar
The address recorded in your Aadhaar is used across a range of services from KYC verification to benefit eligibility and document delivery. An outdated address can result in undelivered correspondence failed verifications and disruptions to services tied to your location.
Unlike name or date of birth updates which have lifetime limits your Aadhaar address can be updated as many times as needed. Since several service providers pull your address directly from Aadhaar keeping it current here updates it across linked services as well

Documents Required
You need one valid Proof of Address (PoA) that shows your name and your current address. The most commonly accepted documents are:
- Passport voter ID or driving licence
- Bank passbook or a recent bank statement
- Utility bill (electricity water gas or landline) dated within the last three months
- Ration card or a registered rent agreement
Two things to ensure before uploading: the address you enter must match the document exactly and the document must reflect your current address.
How to Update Your Address Online
This route requires a mobile number registered with Aadhaar as each step is verified by OTP.
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Login
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number complete the captcha and enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile
- Select the Address Update service
- Enter your new address exactly as it appears on your supporting document
- Upload a clear colour scan of your Proof of Address
- Pay the applicable fee submit and save your Service Request Number (SRN)
If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar the online route is not available. You will need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra instead.
How to Update Your Address Offline
Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar or if your proof of address needs in-person verification.
- Locate your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra using the UIDAI Bhuvan map
- Fill in the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Form available at the centre or downloadable from uidai.gov.in
- Submit your original Proof of Address for scanning by the operator
- Complete biometric verification through fingerprint or iris scan
- Pay ₹75 and collect your acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number (URN)
Updating Address Without Proof of Address: The Head of Family Route
If you do not have valid address proof in your name UIDAI provides the Head of Family (HoF) route. This allows a family member whose Aadhaar already lists the correct address to authorise the update on your behalf.
On the myAadhaar portal select the family-member-based address update option enter the HoF’s Aadhaar number indicate your relationship and upload a Proof of Relationship. Accepted documents include a ration card marriage or birth certificate or a passport showing both names.
Once submitted the Head of Family receives an OTP approval request that must be completed within 30 days. If the window lapses without approval the request expires and will need to be resubmitted. Informing the family member in advance avoids this.
How to Track Your Request
Your SRN or URN is required to track the status of your update.
- Go to the myAadhaar portal
- Open Check Aadhaar Update Status under My Aadhaar
- Enter your SRN or URN and complete the captcha
- Submit to view the current status: in progress approved or rejected
If approved the updated eAadhaar can be downloaded immediately. If rejected the status screen will indicate the reason allowing you to correct the issue before resubmitting.
Common Reasons for Rejection
Most rejections are document-related:
- The address entered does not match the supporting document exactly including the PIN code
- The uploaded scan is blurry cropped or in black and white
- The document shows a name other than the applicant’s own
- The Head of Family did not complete OTP approval within the 30-day window
Resubmitting with a clear colour scan and an address that matches the document precisely resolves the majority of these issues.
Fees and Processing Time
Online document uploads through myAadhaar are currently free until 14 June 2027 following an extension by UIDAI in June 2026. At a centre a standalone address update costs ₹75 revised in October 2025. All fees are non-refundable.
Most updates are processed within a few working days. UIDAI’s formal timeline allows up to 30 days. You will receive an SMS once the update is approved and the new eAadhaar will be available to download immediately after.
