Born in Patna, India, in 1666, Guru Gobind Singh was a spiritual leader and warrior who fought against oppression and injustice. Sikhs revere him as a great saint and martyr, and his birthday is celebrated as a major holy day each year. 

He was the only son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 9th Sikh Guru. Gobind Singh’s mother was Mata Gujri. He fought against the Mughal rulers trying to force the Sikhs to convert to Islam. He inspired the Sikhs to stand up against injustice and oppression and to follow the path of truth and righteousness.

Guru Gobind Singh played a vital role in Indian history. He is known for his military victories against the Mughal Empire and his establishment of the Khalsa Panth, the Sikh brotherhood. As part of Guru Gobind Singh’s final instructions before he passed away, Sikhs were asked to consider Guru Granth Sahib their principal religious scripture. This day is a reminder of the importance of standing up for what you believe in and fighting for justice.

Public Life on Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti 2024

On Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, Sikhs gather at their local gurdwara (Sikh temple) to pray and listen to readings from the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs.

Gurdwaras are open to everyone, and the festivities usually include a langar or communal meal. Sikhs also take this opportunity to perform Seva, or selfless service, such as volunteering at a local kitchen and giving food to those in need or helping the elderly.
